Rare Bird Accounts

10/18/04

These Magnificent Frigatebird pictures were taken on 10/29/2002 at Lake Allatoona, in Bartow County, GA by Bob Zaremba and Earl Horn.

The bird was first found and identified by Georgann Schmalz at 10AM Tuesday morning as it crossed I-75 near mile marker 280. Several birders converged on the location around 12:30PM.  The bird was relocated at approximately 1:45PM at the Old Hiway 41 #2 Day Use Area.  The bird was observed both soaring and perched for the next 4 hours by multiple observers.   According to the winter manager for the area, the bird has been here for "several days".   The bird seems to like to perch is a bare snag on the peninsula of land adjacent to the boat ramp, almost out to the tip.
