Subject: KMT REPORT MONDAY, 17AUG98 0800 TO 1230 WEATHER: Warm and humid; Totally overcast with fog( but not sitting right on the mountain); The fog and clouds cleared out about 0900 and the morning turned out to be very pleasant. OBSERVERS: Kenny Peloquin Because of the fog and earlier rain I parked at the saddle area and worked the top and then down to the open area. There were two very nice flocks on the top. The first on the top was probably the same group we have seen for the the last several days. The second flock was below the upper parking deck and may have been part of the upper flock. Viewing was excellent. Most birds were moving through the lower trees and particularly in the shrubbery areas especially on the top. Had numerous views at ten feet or less away. I believe the list to follow is on the conservative side. 1. 6 Turkey Vultures 2. 2 Red-shouldered Hawks 3. 3 Broad-winged Hawks (close views of all three) The raptors were great about noon over the Little Kennesaw area. The Broad-winged Hawks were doing turnovers and they were diving and chasing the Turkey Vultures. They got pretty close several times. Don't know if this was for fun or the real thing. The two Red-shouldered Hawks popped up and then out of nowhere a small hawk came diving down into the trees on little KMT. Things were really getting exciting when it suddenly began to rain and the show ended. 4. 7 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (1`a.m.,2 imm. m.,2 f, 3 unid.) 5. 41 Chimney swifts 6. 3 Swallows (sp?) 7. 5 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (1 m on top,3 saddle area, 1 open area) 8. 1 White-eyed Vireo (imm.) 9. 7 Red-eyed Vireos (all seen) 10. 3 Northern Parulas 11. 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 12. 9 Black-throated Green Warblers (at least 9, 5 on top and 4 in parking area) 13. 3 Prairie Warblers (3 imm. fem. as best I could tell) 14. 1 Cerulean Warbler (may have been 2, imm. or adult male) 15. 5 Black and White Warblers (3 on top,1 saddle,1 open area; 1 very imm?,and 4 females (although none of these birds had black on the throats some of them had very dark streaking on their sides) 16. 2 Worm-eating Warblers (great viewing on one of them) 17. 2 Hooded Warblers (both males) Despite the start of the weather this was a great day for birding. If it hadn't been for the noon time rain I might have had more numbers. I didn't get down into the saddle area. Sure could have used some other eyes to help me out. Sorry you all missed this one.
