2001 KENNESAW MOUNTAIN SPRING SUMMARY Here is the Spring Summary for KMT for 2001. The usual format: Four letter band code for each species, then total number seen this season followed by the five year average for the season. Next are extreme dates for the season, followed by common dates for the season, if there were any. "NC" means never common, or at least not consistently. Next is the one day high count followed by the all-time one day count for the season in parens. The season total is the sum of all daily totals, so a single bird seen on successive days will artificially pump up the total, as will breeders seen often. I will try to comment when this occurs. Added this year are species not seen this season but normally seen for comparison. Of this very low total, almost 1400 of the 1700 below average is accounted for by a very low year for YRWA. The most interesting thing from this spring was that several species had unusually late peaks: CSWA, MAWA, CMWA, BTBW, BTNW, BLBW, BLPW and AMRE. This peak was during roughly 5-15 May. Additionally, several species arrived 5-7 days later than usual. I have not figured out a correlation yet or know if this was a widespread phenomenon. Looking back over the last years, there is also an interesting correlation between yearly numbers of Summer and Scarlet Tanagers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, all of which seem to have good years and poor years at the same time. Don't know if this means anything either, as usual there are many more questions than answers. As always, many thanks to everyone who turned in info from the spring, and to Bob Z for keeping the spreadsheet current. If you have any comments, please send them to me or Bob and see you in the fall.
