1999 KENNESAW MOUNTAIN FALL SUMMARY Here is the 1999 Fall Summary for KMT. Even though we had a lower number of dates covered compared to most years, we got lots of good data and many thanks to all of those who birded out there and turned in their sightings. This summary is again in a new format, please comment on things you like or don’t like. The number after the species is the season total, then the extreme seasonal dates, then the dates when this species was most “common” (subjective). Next is the high daily count with the alltime high daily count in parens, followed at last with pertinent comments. Note that “total” refers to the whole season, and “count” refers to a daily number. Also note that in the season total this is total number of sightings, and individuals may be recounted on successive days. There will usually be a comment for rare species if this happens (see ALFL, WAVI). For warblers, the average total for the last five falls is shown in the last column as “5ya” for comparison. It pays to scan over Little Ken for raptors, and to check the swifts for swallows mixed in. Thrush numbers are low partially due to the absence of some of the most dedicated thrush observers from previous seasons. The total number of warblers reported was 2415, an increase of 248 over Fall ’98. Many species had very low years, though better than last year. The 5-year average for all warblers is 2970.8. This is something we will be tracking for spring and fall in upcoming years. We will also be looking at observer numbers and dates to see if the totals reflect observer bias or fluctuating numbers of birds present. Thanks again for all your help!! Giff
